The Guajira Kite Trip We Downwind To La Boquita From Punta Gallinas, Super Fun!

This is an exciting local downwind that starts in a huge inner bay right outside Luz Mila lodging hotel, called Bahía Hondita. Kiting downwind all over the huge bay is a delight, with strong steady wind and flat water. At the bottom of the bay you then kite through a narrow canal with cliffs on one side and marshes on the other, out into the open ocean to a beach called Punta Aguja. Here you’ll be served lunch and can rest in hammocks before the return to the start spot in the support boat. The views and spectacles and the passage through the narrow canal called La Boquita (little mouth) out into the open sea is a kiting experience that will forever remain etched in your mind!

Kite Trips Colombia Guajira Desert are for the true adventure seekers

Morever, the Guajira desert is a vast territory on the northernmost part of Colombia that is totally barren with dry forest desert and temperatures that can reach 38ºC/100ºF. It is undeveloped, without roads, stores, or supermarkets. It’s inhabited by the native wayuu indigenous people since before the arrival of the Spanish settlers. The wayuu hostels where we stay have all the basics, but creature comforts are low. This all makes part of the experience, and the beauty and mystique of this exotic land together with the incredible kitesurfing makes up for a great kitesurfing adventure!

INCLUDED IN ALL OUR TOURS:

  • Airport transfers.
  • Sleeping arrangements in beds in shared cabanas in medium to high end lodgings in the areas of Salinas and Lake Calima, best available lodgings in the Guajira desert.

Downwind Pusheo From Punta Gallinas

This thrilling farewell from Punta Gallinas downwind starts just like the La Boquita downwind but is longer (13 kms/8 mi) with 5 kms/3 mi out in the open ocean. The kiting is exciting and adrenaline packed, but always safe thanks to local pro instructor kiters and a support boat always guiding and escorting. The view of the rugged Guajira coastline from the ocean is mesmerizing, this whole downwind you will be incredulous as to the surrounding landscapes. This downwind ends in a spot called Pusheo. Here the Toyota Land Cruisers that were already pre-loaded with all belongings will be waiting for the trip to Cabo de La Vela, 2.5 hours. But only after another delicious local lunch in Pusheo!

The Drives in the Guajira Desert …

… are long and bumpy. This map shows the trip from Riohacha, the capital of the state of Guajira (where the airport is) to Punta Gallinas, 255 km. Punta Gallinas is the northernmost tip of Colombia and South America. This map says 7 hours 17 minutes but that drive time is now actually down to ~6 hours because they’ve recently paved long stretches of the road north of Uribia. But after a certain point there ceases to be road and it’s off-roading like the Paris-Dakar. It is rugged and bumpy, with stops to stretch the legs and enjoy the amazing views of the desert.

Super cool crosswinder on one of our kite trips in Colombia!

During out kite trips on the Atlantic coast close to Cartagena, we have an amazing crosswinder. This one starts at a spot called Lomita Arena and goes straight out into the open ocean to a small island called Isla Arena. Furthermore, the island is not visible from land! We have support boat that takes tents, chairs, music and food. Once at the island the kiting is flat and fun!

What kitesurfing level is appropriate for kite trips in Colombia?

You would best enjoy these kite trips at intermediate to advanced level. You should be able to go up wind, recover your board, self water launch, and know how to do self rescue. These skills are important to have for these adventures even if during our kite trips you will always be accompanied by pro local kiters. Furthermore, during downwinds you will be accompanied by support boats.

And We Can See Flamingos!

In Punta Gallinas, from the end of April up to the end of August, we can see flamingos during our kite trips in Colombia!

When we know the flamingos are in Punta Gallinas, we start a downwinder at another spot called El Mirador, a few kms south of Luz Mila’s hotel and bay. Starting from this spot we kite surf this bay and there’s an area where the flamingos hang out. It’s a totally unforgettable experience to kite close to the marshes edge and see them up close. One thing that will for sure surprise you is how they are bigger than you imagined!

Lake Calima, Valle del Cauca Great Kite Trip In Colombia

Calima lake is a man made lake in Colombia. It is a hydroelectric dam that was completed in 1966 and is one of the biggest in Latin America. It is a 1.5 hour drive (90 kms/56 mi) from the city of Cali in the southwest region of Colombia, also the same amount of time from the Alfonso Bonilla Aragón airport.

The lake is 1,500 meters above sea level and surrounded by towering mountain. With time it became a coveted weekend and holiday leisure destination for the locals of the city of Cali, other cities of Colombia,  and lately international tourists. It’s main attractions are its cooler than Cali temperature, stunningly beautiful settings, and water sport activites.

The small town next to the lake is called El Darién. Its median temperature is 18ºC/64.4ºF and has around 19,000 inhabitants.

map of lake Calima, in Colombia

Lake Calima makes a great place to spend your days practicing or learning kitesurfing. The wind is super reliable, from 18 kts to 25 kts all year round, making for lots of fun!

Furthermore, in the area we will take you paragliding, mountain biking, trekking and bird watching in its beautiful and relaxing atmosphere during the morning hours.

To get to Calima you must first fly into the local airport of the city of Cali, the capital of the state of Valle del Cauca. From there we will pick you up and transfer you to the lake.

Afterward, we will set you up at your lodgings and depending on the time of your arrival we can immediately head to the spot and get a session in or if it’s too late or too early for kitesurfing, go and do some exploring around the bucolic town of El Darién.
